Question by Wifix: Cheap Hearing Aids vs Custom Ones?
We are planning on buying a pair of hearing aids for a relitive in a different country (not sure if they offer hearing aids there...) so we were wondering what to get. I know you need an appointment and tests to make a custom one so that is not an option. We have found some for online and we are considering buying one of those but are they decent quality? Also is there somewhere we can buy and out of the box pair in Toronto (for less then 500$) without going online?

Best answer:

Answer by Norm
Hi Wyfix,

My mother in law had two "special tuned" digital hearing aids. (One at 00 and one was 00). One of them went out and had to be sent off for repairs so I bought one of those amplifiers for her to use while hers was gone. It came with several rubber earpieces one of which fit her ear. The idea was for her to "get by" until the repaired aid was returned.

She got along fine and when her digital aid came back she put it back in & couldn't hear as well. Long story short we wound up getting another one and now she hears better with two "Ear Amplifiers" then she did with 00 in hearing aids.

Here is the ones we got her - http://health-products.drleonards.com/Health-Products/Hearing-Aids/Personal-Sound-Amplifier-Sound-Amplifier/47498.cfm

It's worth a try. Hers are, I guess, a couple years old & still working. At apiece you could afford a spare.

Norm

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by janeisadoe: What is the best kind of hearing aid that isn't terribly expensive?
I do have a hearing loss. I have looked at the digital (very expensive) and the amplifier that goes in your ear. I don't have any experience, and would like to hear from those who have tried different kinds to find out what is the best.

Best answer:

Answer by ZCT
It depends what you call expensive. Generally quality hearing aids are at least ,000 for a pair but can be as much as ,000. Remember that not all digital hearing aids are the same, they vary from brand to brand and also even within brands there are dozens of different kinds that all fall into the category of digital.

I have fitted hundreds of patients over the past 12 years. For the first six years I worked for the two largest independent hearing aid companies in the UK (I now work in the US). When there I got to fit most of the major brands and see the results. My favorite brand is Starkey/Audibel. They appear to last a long time, have very low distortion and are a huge all American company that only make hearing aids. They fitted four US presidents.

When you go and see a hearing instrument specialist you should insist on a free trial of at least 30 days, you should be concerned if (s)he doesn't arrange for follow up appointments or lets you wear the aids home the first time. You should also be concerned if they are not equipped to fit you with a real digital hearing aid system right there on the day of the test so you can listen to it before buying. The real system will probably have to be special ordered to fit your ear, but a good dispenser should be able to rig up a real hearing aid system with disposable ear pieces so you can at least experience a real hearing aid system.

The bottom line is that if you have a real hearing loss the best way to help yourself is to bite the bullet and spend the money on a decent system. I have never yet met a patient who got any satisfaction from the kind of amplifiers that you can buy online. Most hearing loss varies from one frequency to another, so an amplifier will not correct that. It would be like buying a magnifying glass instead of a set of prescription glasses.

Best answer:

Answer by ZCT
Good hearing aids will vary from between ,000 - ,000 each.

There is no easy answer to who will provide the best service. A lot of it depends on the individual specialist and office he works for. You will need to research locally to find out who is best.

When you go for a test find out about warranty and service. Ensure you get a trial period, and ask about cancellation fees. Also request a demonstration before you buy. A good specialist should be able to program a real hearing aid system to match your loss, and let you listen to them before you decide to buy. If the make an excuse about this, shop elsewhere.

I think that Starkey is the best company out there. They are a huge American company with some very innovative products.

Looking to buy a hearing aid for my mother.

Best answer:

Answer by hearkat
There are several hearing aid manufacturers with excellent technology available. Which one is best for YOUR mother can not be determined here. She needs a current hearing evaluation (less than six months old), and a Hearing Aid Evaluation, preferably to include a demonstration, so she can listen through hearing aids to experience what the sound is like. Also, don't consider just the hearing aid(s), also make sure you find an Audiologist that you feel you can trust and who establishes a good rapport with your mother, for the long term of service.

There are many variables to consider when choosing the best hearing aids for an individual. Here are some resources to help you find out more:
