Medicare Hearing Aid – Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids?

Since hearing loss is such a common problem as we age, many people ask the question, “Does Medicare cover hearing aids?”

The short answer is, “No,” but there are occasions when there is at least a good portion of Medicare will pay for hearing aids.

As we age, the hair cells inside our ears get damaged or naturally deteriorate. Called sensorineural hearing loss, it generally falls outside the scope of a valid Medicare hearing aid payment.

However, Medicare does pay for hearing aids in some instances. If you feel your hearing is impaired, speak to your doctor first.

Your doctor will help you determine what type of hearing loss you are suffering from. He or she may direct you to a clinician who will give you a diagnostic hearing exam.

This type of exam is often covered by Medicare. It will then be determined whether or not you need a hearing aid and if it is necessitated by an illness or injury and not due to the normal aging process.

If your hearing loss falls under the right category, you may be entitled to hearing aids for Medicare patients who have lost hearing due to injury or illness. You may have to bear some of the costs, but not all.
