Audacity will. Get it from:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It is open source so you can feel safe. No viruses, Spyware, Adware.

You also want to install Lame, and other codecs that will allow you to convert files as well(MP3, OGG, AC3, AAC, etc.). OGG Vorbis is a good one too.

http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Lame is for MP3′s for all the others you will have to read and google to find, the Audacity website should give some good sources for them.

p.s. by the way, you might be able to go to Radio Shack and get different connection cord that will allow Stereo. There are also cords that convert stereo to mono as well. You could do it yourself, if you have a spare connector, you just twist the ground wires(once stripped they are the bare wires wrapped around the red or white wire) of the cord together, and then twist the red and white wires(channel) together. Make sure the ground and channel wires do not touch otherwise you will not like the buzz you hear. Better to just buy the right connector.

  1. You mean “monophonic” music instead of “stereophonic” music?

You only need to listen to one channel of most music as there is little difference between the two channels. So a monophonic cable with monophonic plugs should work quite well.
