Is There Really a Waterproof Hearing Aid?
Is there such a thing as a waterproof hearing aid?
One of the biggest problems with hearing aids and one that most wearers don’t even consider is that of water.
When we’re talking about a water proof hearing aid, we’re not talking about one that you can wear swimming – there is no such thing.
We’re talking about a hearing device that does not get damaged by water under normal conditions.
Humid conditions cause a build up of moisture inside the ear. This can be transferred to the hearing aid and lead to a lot of problems. The tiny circuits in the aid are very sensitive to moisture and even high humidity can damage or ruin them.
The problem with trying to develop a hearing aid that is waterproof is that sound cannot travel through a sealed unit. Their must be an opening for sound to travel through. It may be a tiny opening, but an opening is an opening and if air can find its way through it, so can water.
While nobody claims to have developed fully waterproofed aids, some companies have developed highly water-resistant ones. One company has made one that can stay fully immersed in water for up to an hour before it malfunctions. Other companies with more modest ambitions have developed effective seals and coverings to protect the hearing device from water, but a truly waterproof hearing aid is yet to be made.
If you are looking for a waterproof hearing aid I would suggest taking a look at the Waterproof Hunter Electronic Earplugs (pictured below).
